INFORMATION ABOUT

THE MBTI® QUALIFYING PROGRAMME

Why is it a ‘Qualifying’ Programme?

Use of the MBTI is restricted and controlled by its publisher, Consulting Psychologists Press (CPP) and their New Zealand agent, the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER).

Purchasers of the MBTI instrument and associated material are expected to:

·         have a professional reason for using it

·         have preferably completed tertiary course work in psychological or educational tests and measurement, or have received documented training

·         have an understanding of the MBTI related theory and research gained through training and individual study

The MBTI Qualifying Programme is designed to provide you with the basic knowledge necessary to ensure you are competent to use and interpret results from the MBTI and that you use it ethically. It includes some basic training in tests and measurements, as well as the specific grounding in MBTI needed for its professional use.

Upon successful completion of the Qualifying Programme and examination, NZAPT will notify NZCER to register you as an MBTI user. This will enable you to purchase MBTI instruments from NZCER. NZCER has responsibility for registering people prior to their purchase of the MBTI. This is part of their responsibility for supplying psychological instruments in New Zealand to appropriately qualified people.

Criteria for Acceptance on the MBTI Qualifying Programme

To be eligible to attend an NZAPT MBTI Qualifying Programme you must:

1.      Have previously taken the MBTI and received proper feedback.

2.      Have recognised tertiary qualifications and/or occupational experience in areas such as education, careers counselling, management or organisational consultancy, adult training, health sciences, social work, rehabilitation or pastoral care.

3.      Have familiarity with the basic terms of Type Theory and be interested in the Indicator.

Please ensure that you include details of your qualifications and/or occupational experience (as outlined above) with your registration to enable us to swiftly approve your application. Note that NZAPT reserves the right to accept or decline applications.  No correspondence will be entered into on this matter.

Typical Participants

Most participants on the Qualifying Programme are professionals who are planning to use the MBTI in their work. Typically they are psychologists, career counsellors, marital and family counsellors, educators, management and organisation development professionals, pastoral counsellors, professionals in religious communities and specialists in communications.

As the training involves advanced learning that builds on a self-understanding of type, NZAPT recommends that the Qualifying Programme be undertaken only by those people who have some experience of the MBTI (i.e. at a minimum have had the MBTI administered by, and received feedback from, someone qualified in the use of the MBTI).

Content of the Qualifying Programme

Qualifying is a first step in the training of professionals to use the MBTI. The programme includes:

·         History and uses of the MBTI

·         Jung's theory of psychological type and Isabel Myers' refinement and development of this theory and its expression in the MBTI

·         The dynamics of type descriptions

·         Basic tests and measurement including: validity, reliability, test construction

·         The psychometrics of the MBTI and how it differs from other psychological instruments

·         How to use, score and interpret the results from the MBTI

·         Ethical use of the MBTI

·         An overview of type research

·         Alternative ways of presenting MBTI to individuals and groups

The programme does not cover Jungian psychology in general; nor does it deal, more than briefly, with other systems which make use of psychological type concepts. It is not designed to provide in-depth training in any single application of the instrument, nor to provide the educational or consulting skills needed to use the MBTI in groups or organisations.

Course Preparation

The MBTI Qualifying Programme comprises three parts: - preparing for the training course; the course itself; and the written examination. You are asked to complete a Self Study Guide prior to attending the training course. This Guide will be sent to you on confirmation of the Programme and receipt of full payment of the programme fee.

The Self Study Guide contains readings, exercises and self-tests. It is very comprehensive and especially designed to help you become familiar with the basic concepts of Type Theory; and aspects of psychological tests.

To help you complete the Self Study Guide you will also need to read portions of three books (see below). How much time you will need for this preparation will depend on your past experience with the MBTI and psychological tests in general. If you have little experience we estimate you allow about 30 - 40 hours. Those who do not complete the home study often have difficulty keeping up during the training course and in passing the final exam.

Required Reading

The Self-Study Guide refers to the following three texts. You will need these as you prepare for the course and during the course:

·         MBTI Manual: A Guide to the Development and Use of the MBTI, 3rd Edition (1998)

·         Introduction to Type, 6th Edition (1998)

·         Introduction to Type in Organizations

The books are available from NZCER and an order form is included in the attached documents. Please note that as the books are sourced from the USA it is important that you order them early.

The Training Course

The course includes exercises, small group work and lectures. Most people find they need to allow time each evening to review the day's work and to prepare for the examination.

The Examination

This exam is on the last morning of the training course. It consists of multiple choice questions covering the material provided in the pre-course Self Study Guide and during the training course.  A score of 80% in the four key areas: History & Construction; Theory; Administration & Interpretation; and Tests & Measures, is required to pass the examination. Your examination results will be mailed to you within three weeks of the completion of the training course.

NB. Participants who are currently registered with NZCER as List C or D users are not required to sit the exam.  If you have List C or D registration please check this out with NZCER before coming on the course.

Becoming a Registered Test-User

Your examination results, along with the endorsement of your trainers, are the basis used by NZAPT for recommending you to NZCER to be a registered user of the MBTI.

NZAPT trainers approve or withhold their endorsement of recommending your becoming a registered user of the MBTI on the basis of your use of the MBTI during the course.  No correspondence will be entered into on this matter.

An application form to become an MBTI test-user and a copy of the NZCER policy for the supply of the MBTI will be available during the training course. NZCER does not currently charge for this service or for advice on the use of the Indicator.

The Qualifying Programme Fee

The fee for the programme with details of discounts for ‘early bird’ registration, NZAPT members, and groups are given on the registration form. The fee covers programme registration, the comprehensive APT Self Study Guide and faculty costs; all course handout materials; and lunches, morning and afternoon teas during the training course.

Fee Subsidy

Those engaged in community work or whose financial circumstances mean the fee is an obstacle to attending the programme may apply for a subsidy on the fee. Application for subsidy should be made on the Fee Subsidy Application Form available from the NZAPT office (Tel. 0800 756 675 or e-mail nzapt@paradise.net.nz). Any decision will be made at the discretion of the NZAPT Training Committee and no correspondence will be entered into. The closing date for fee subsidy applications is usually 7 weeks before the start of the programme.
